BARN HOUSE  |  SCHUURWONING  |  nl

Modern barn houses are building typologies inspired by agricultural buildings that re-imagine the principles of rustic design in vastly different ways. Although they reference the same simple silhouette of barns and their material palette, these dwellings look diverse and distinctive.

Conceived to fit within a quiet meadow on the beautiful island of Goeree-Overflakkee, this 'schuurwoning' bridges the gap between vernacular, agrarian buildings and contemporary architecture. The sturdy look has a traditional element, yet the overall look is far from nostalgic. A barn house comes into its own particularly well in a rural environment where large windows can look out on a forest edge, polder landscape, a lake or other rural views.

The owners wanted to open up their home to the spacious garden and connect the interior to the natural landscape. To achieve this goal, we transformed the home's ground floor into an open-plan space. Large glass doors and glass wall partitions stretch across the front elevation, offering a beautiful, panoramic view of the garden and creating a unique visual link to the outdoors.

While the basic outline is similar across different settings, the elaboration of a 'barn house' is free so that no two are the same. This is why, as architects, we know exactly how to bring out those elements that make your 'schuurwoning' unique.
